Who Am I?

Hello, I’m Jemma.

I became interested in minimising the environmental impact of the big day because my partner works for an environmental charity.

We try to keep our life-style as green as we can so we didn’t want to compromise our beliefs for our wedding.

Consequently I’ve had lots of ideas – so many that I can’t possibly use them all! And done lots and lots of research.  So LeBigKiss have kindly offered me a page on their site so I can pass on some of this information to you and you can also email me and ask questions jemma@lebigkiss.com

Transport

Obviously it makes sense to have the reception and ceremony near

each other – or even in the same place if you’re having a civil wedding.

I’ve seen photos of some couples turning up on “a bicycle made for two!”

And it makes sense if your guests are staying in the same hotel to hire a

mini bus to drop them all back – then they can have a glass of wine as well!

Our venue is easily accessible by train, so these are all things to consider

if you want to avoid everyone driving.

Favours

I’m having cookies with people’s names on for my ceremony – all made with organic, fair trade ingredients of course! By Joanna at www.yummycakecompany.co.uk/

But again, I think you should just go to your local cake maker, who’ll make you a cake in the sort of design you want, and tell them you don’t mind paying a bit more for them to use local organic flour, free range eggs and fair trade sugar.

Most cake-makers would be only too happy to help!

Another great little favour is these cute little bags www.sharethefeeling.co.uk/shop/ made by people with disabilities in London.  They’ll put whatever you like in, and make them whatever colour you like, and they are really cute.  This company also make invitations, and they are lovely, but very pricey compared to the price of the little bags!

Or you could go with the recycled option of a pen made out of old CD cases or something or maybe a beeswax candle (you have to be careful with soy candles, as apparently rainforests are being cut down to grow the soy – nightmare!).

Or just some green and blacks mini chocolates are sweet.

Stationery

There aren’t that many green stationery companies out there yet.  Which is why lebigkiss is so great!

I know this is their website, but honestly! Tanya is full of ideas, and will do her very best to incorporate

whatever design you want, whilst sourcing everything she can in as green a way a possible.

What more could you want! We told her we were having an Autumn theme for our wedding,

and within a couple of weeks, there were three beautiful hand-crafted samples on our doorstep.

The only problem was working out which one to choose! And when I made some suggestions for altering

the designs slightly, nothing was too much trouble.

So to be honest, I couldn’t recommend anyone else and that’s the truth!

Decoration

As I said, if you keep the venue beautiful, you have to worry less about the decoration.  Flowers can be very expensive and are often grown using loads of pesticides and air-freighted.  However, I wouldn’t advocate travelling miles to an expensive organic florist – just get a local one to order in seasonal flowers (a good one should know!!) and ask them to use either re-usable vases, or even wine bottles – we’re having old drinks bottles filled with stones, with hessian tied with raffia to keep it natural.

Bunting always looks pretty and isn’t expensive at all

www.zigzagbunting.com and www.cottonbunting.co.uk

are both good or of course you could go to a market, pick out the fabrics and make your own

– the good thing is you can do it well in advance.

Hiring in topiary is a great way of having decoration without having to buy something which will just die!

Another idea is to make the flowers on the table potted plants – lavender or bulbs like narcissi would both

work really well and smell gorgeous!

Location

I would recommend choosing this very carefully as it could eat up a lot of your budget.  And if you pick somewhere truly beautiful, you won’t have to spend much on costly (and usually disposable) decorations.

A lovely old barn, a yurt, or a garden all work well with a natural theme and all provide their own inherent

beauty without you having to cover everything in bows and voiles as some weddings are these days.

www.countryhouseweddingvenues.co.uk have some great old barns and things as well as outdoor marquee based locations.

www.overthemoontents.com has some great yurts and tents but there are hundreds of these companies popping up now so you’d be best to research them yourselves.
